Sony Recinds on Helldivers 2 PSN Demand

by on May 6, 2024

In the wake of player outcry, pushback, and extensive review bombing, Sony is backing down from its demand. The study has insisted that Helldivers 2 players link their PSN accounts on PC to continue playing.

Considering PSN isn’t available in many countries, this would mean a lot of players won’t be able to get their hands on one of the year’s biggest hits. Although Arrowhead Games stated it was in Sony’s hands, they still got blamed.

Interesting, and a surprising turn of events the studio has been lauded as a great feedback handler. Arrowhead had previously been praised for their involvement in the community and their very well-received game.

In addition, things seem to have gotten out of control. Within days following the PSN demand, things soured. During the weekend Helldivers 2 was delisted from Steam in areas without PSN access. That didn’t stop the reactions, or the review bombings, with over 100k negative reviews.

Sony has decided to put out the raging fires by withdrawing the demand to link accounts. The company said in a statement today:

“Helldivers fans — we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.

We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we’ll keep you updated on future plans.”

While Sony has responded favorably to players’ demands, there is still a lot to undo. For starters, Steam will need to reestablish access to those regions and countries affected by its weekend cancellation.

Another important step that must be followed is the negative reviews that must be canceled. that’s 100K revisions to adjust or cancel. Even as we write, we acknowledge that it will be a hectic task for any studio.
